Sex skin colouration in male Sulawesi  crested black macaques

The frequency with which male sexual colouration occurs within the primate order is unique among the mammals. However, very little is known about its function and physiological correlates.

The overall aim of this study therefore is to investigate the adaptive significance and physiological basis of sex skin colouration (scrotum and perineum skin) in adult males. We will furthermore compare colour intensity with male loud call characteristics to identify the relationship between these two sexual signals.

Through behavioural observations, we will clarify whether the intensity in sex skin colour is reflected in agonistic behaviour and whether fertile females prefer brightly coloured males as consort or mating partners. We will finally determine the relationship between male sex skin colour and reproductive success using paternity analysis.
