The function of sexual signals

The aim of this project is to investigate the functional significance of sexual signals in males and females. In both sexes, there are auditory as well as visual signals for which the adaptive significance is not yet clarified. In males, we study loud calls and the colouration of sex skin (scrotum and perineum). In fermales, copulation calls and swellings of the anogential region (sexual swellings) are investigated. We use a combination of classic and newly invented field methods to determine the signals’

a) individual variation,

b) effect on group mates,

c) endocrinological correlates and

d) effect on male reproductive success.

Since all applied techniques are completely non-invasive, we will be able to conduct all studies under completely natural conditions with a minimum of animal disturbance.
