Almost nothing is known about the reproductive biology of Sulawesi crested black macaques in the wild so far. We therefore aim at investigating the basic reproductive parameters of males and females including reproductive development and strategies. Taking into account that much of the original macaque habitat has already been converted into secondary forest and scrubland, data from primary and disturbed forests will be compared to investigate vulnerability and flexibility of this species to changes in habitat. Furthermore, genetic studies will be conducted in order to measure the degree of inbreeding in the study population.

STUDIES

*      Sexual behaviour and swellings of adult females

*     Sexual development in adolescent females

*      Infant development

*      Basic female reproductive parameters

*     Male dominance and reproductive success
