We have a new guest in Tangkoko. A Hawksbill sea turtle has laid her eggs just in front of the camp. We will guard the nest and see the next generation of her kind reach the sea safely. |

Our camp manager Gholib (right) has left Tangkoko for starting a master program on reproductive biology at IPB (funded by DPZ). He has been replaced by Ugiek (left), who has been formerly doing his Bachelor thesis within the project.

Gholib's last day was celebrated with a boat trip. The Macaca Nigra Project says "Thank you!" to Gholib for his engagement!

Seminar in Manado Members of the Macaca Nigra Project gave a half-day seminar on aspects of primatology to the staff (of BKSDA (the local Department for the Conservation of Natural Resources, including rangers from Tagkoko) in Manado. The seminar was coordinated by the project’s camp manager and research coordinator Gholib Assahad (middle), who was supported by the PhD students Daphne Kerhoas (3. right) and Julie Duboscq (4. right). It was highly appreciated by members of BKSDA including the head, Pak Ir. Dominggus (5. right), and intensified collaboration between both institutions. A Memorandum of Understanding is currently in preparation. |

Visit of Dr. Oliver Schülke Dr. Oliver Schülke (2. left) from the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany has been visiting the station to introduce the new PhD student from IPB, Maria Ulfa (right) to the techniques of primate feeding ecology examinations. A complementary study on the social relationships of female Macaca nigra will be carried out by Julie Duboscq (front) from DPZ.

Second „Wallacea“ Seminar The second „Wallacea“ seminar has taken place – this time in the village Batu Putih Atas. Topics comprised the especialness of the Wallacean flora and fauna, current aims and activities of the Macaca Nigra Project, general aspects of ecosystems and conservation, and specific threats to the macaques. Members of the local guide club “Kontak” were invited to present their conservation activities to the public. |
Further seminars were given by Dr. Saroyo Sumarto of the local University Sam Ratulangi, Manado and by Pak Reol Welua, head of the Nature Reserve Tangkoko-Batuangus. More than 50 villagers, mostly young people, joined the half-day seminar, which ended with an open discussion on views and problems of the villagers. |

Gholib's poster on "Rank dependant differences in loud call frequency and structure in Sulawesi crested black macaques (Macaca nigra)" has won the second poster prize on the 2nd congress of the European Federation for Primatology (EFP). Congratulations! |

Dr. Vicky Melfi from Paignton Zoo, who is also the stat- book holder for Macaca nigra in European Zoos, and her team have visited the project. They are carrying out a survey to assess the remaining population of Macaca nigra in the wild. |
