Hunting and habiat loss form the biggest threat to the Sulawesi crested black macaques. Our project is therefore carried out in tight contact with the villagers living on the edge of the Tangkoko-Batuangus Nature Reserve. Individuals from different local families currently hold positions in the project. Working with us hopefully will increase appreciation in their families for the forest and the monkeys.

In addition, constant communication between project scientists and villagers is held up in order to raise biodiversity awareness, expand knowledge and understanding of human-environment interactions and promote conservation action in these people. We, in turn, want to understand their comprehensive view of nature, and their needs and problems.
